Karol Scheibler - one of the greatest industrialists

He was born on 1st September 1820 and he died in 1881 in Lodz. He came from a rich German family.

In 1839 he co-organised cotton industry in Belgium. Karol studied abroad and in 1848 he became a manager in his uncle’s weaving plant in Ozorków near Lodz. In 1853 he came to Lodz. His first spinning factory called the "Headquarters" was built near Wodny Rynek.

He married Anna Werner in 1854, a daughter of a prosperous industrialist. As a result, he succeeded in setting up his first automatic weaving plant in 1855. In the following years he founded the group of buildings Ksiezy Mlyn. It included a factory, blocks for workers, a hospital, a fire-brigade station, a school and his private residence. Thanks to Scheibler between 1850-1860 Lodz became a centre of darning thread production.

His great activity marked the beginning of the new era in the industrial Lodz. He was a founder of the industrial empire in the city. Its development went in parallel with the charity. The Scheiblers generously supported the charity institutions in Lodz.
