Jan Petersilge

Jan Petersilge was born on 19 September 1830 in Dresden, however, he came from a Spanish family that lived in Germany. In 1837 his father, a goldsmith, settled down in Warsaw. Contrary to his many contemporaries, Jan did not follow his father’s footsteps. He trained as a printer and in 1859 came to Lodz where he started his career in printing industry. He published a bilingual Polish-German magazine “Lodzkie Ogloszenia -Lodzer Anzeiger”. In 1866 the magazine was printed only in German. Unfortunately, in 1885 his printing house burned down. Therefore, in 1893-96 he built a new headquarters, called the Gutenberg Tenements, in Piotrkowska Street. Due to his significant contribution to the development of the printing and publishing industry he was recognized as “the father of the Lodz press”. His grave is on the Old Cemetery in Lodz.
