Karol Jonscher - a physician.

    Karol Jonscher was born on 14 February 1850 and died on 14 May 1907 in Lodz. Having graduated from the University of Warsaw, he settled down in Lodz in 1873. His contribution to the development of the city in the field of public health is outstanding. Due to his social activity sanitary conditions improved noticeably. Karol was a co-founder of a major charity organizations in Lodz and a president of the Doctors’ Society in Lodz as well as an active member of the Society of Emergency Service. He took care of poor, neglected factory workers and as a result he established the first hospital in the city for them. What is more, he set up a hospital for mentally ill people, today known as “Kochanowka” and helped to establish a special hospital for children (presently the Janusz Korczak hospital). He was a co-organiser of the Lodz Section of the Hygiene Society "Drop of Milk". He propagated hygiene of infants and children. After his death, he was buried on the Old Cemetery in Lodz.
