Kiejstut Bacewicz A composer, born June 13, 1904 in Lodz, died August 27, 1993 in Zgierz near Lodz. Between 1957-1969 the rector of the National Academy of Music. In 1969 he created the first in Poland Department of Chamber Music. In 1961 he initiated the first International Competition in Chamber Music. Bacewicz gave concerts in Poland and abroad. He was a member of the Music Section of the University Council of Fine Arts at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. He played a significant role in the creation of principles for the reorganisation of academic level musical education. In 1958 he was awarded with the Award of the City Lodz. His best known compositions are: "Toccata" for the piano (1944), "Dwie etiudy" for the piano (1959), "Galaz kwitnaca" 4 songs to words by Leopold Staff, for the piano (1960). |
